JPOLL - the Japanese Public Opinion Database

A User’s Guide to Searching JPOLL
http://www.ropercenter.uconn.edu/JPOLL/home.html

The JPOLL database of Japanese public opinion questions is searchable by a number of indexes including question text, topic, survey organization, and date. Figure 1 shows the most recent version of the search screen.

  1. The keyword search actually looks for a string of characters in the question text. You can enter up to two separate strings of characters in any given search, joined by the logical connectors "and," "or" or "and not."

  2. Click on the topic box and select any topic from the pull-down list by clicking on your choice. If you are uncertain what topic to select, click on the link in the left hand margin for a description of each topic area. Many questions are assigned multiple topics during the archiving process, so don’t worry if you aren’t certain what exact topic to select.

For example, a question concerning a prime minister’s trade negotiations with the United States could be found by searching for either HEADGOV (for head of government), USA, or TRADE.

  3. The organization search option is usually combined with another search option, but it can be selected without any other modifiers. You can click on any of the three radio buttons to limit your search to a specific organization, to eliminate a specific organization or use the default option which imposes no limits on the organization field. Next, click on the organization box and select any organization from the pull-down list by clicking on it.

  4. The date search function allows you to search the entire database or select a specific range of survey dates. The date that you enter must be in the mm/dd/yyyy format otherwise the system will reject it. Note that the year must be in four digits.

  5. The "summary list" option displays the relevant question wording and date interviewing began. Clicking on the question date displays the actual study-level information, question wording, and responses.

The "all responses" option to display search results reports back all questions meeting your search criteria, with the study and response data for each question in one large file. Because keyword searches tend to generate the most "hits," we recommend you choose the "summary list" option for displaying your keyword search results.

  6. Finally, once you have selected your search criteria you can then press "Search" in the upper right hand corner of the page. This will initiate your search and present the results in an easy to read format.

If the server times out your search, return to the main JPOLL page and again select Search JPOLL to reconnect to the search page.
