Depositing Data with The Roper Center

Depositing data at the Roper Center

The Roper Center encourages researchers and survey research firms to deposit their computer-readable survey data in the archives for long-term preservation and for use in secondary analysis by other social science researchers.

Generally, the Center archives survey data files and appropriate documentation containing a methodological description (including sample description, sampling procedures, field dates, response rates, etc.), questionnaires, codebooks, interviewer instructions, weighting information.

Preferably data should be provided in SPSS/PASW portable file format or ASCII text. Documentation can be provided in popular word processing formats (MS-Word, WordPerfect, rich-text format) or ASCII text. Survey reports or news releases could also be included as part of the documentation record. If available, a list of resulting academic citations complete the documentation picture.

Finally, permission to archive and redistribute survey data files must be granted to the Roper Center. This can be accomplished by reviewing and completing the Data Deposit Form (PDF 583KB) for a single survey; or the Data Deposit Collection Form (PDF 1 MB) for an entire collection of surveys.

For more information on preparing a dataset for deposit please consult ICPSR's Guide to Social Science Data Preparation and Archiving, 4th Edition (PDF 1.3MB).

If you have further questions about depositing data to the Roper Center please contact us at rcweb@ropercenter.uconn.edu.
