Harris Poll, [Feb, 2005]

Until recently, almost all governments agreed that no matter what atrocities a government commits against its own people--even if it killed, tortured, or moved many thousands of its people--other countries have no right to intervene. Now because of events in places in Rwanda, Kosovo, and East Timor, other countries have sometimes intervened. I principle, do you think there are some times when other countries should have the right to intervene to protect people from their own government or not?
Harris Poll, [Oct, 1999]

(Do you agree or disagree with the following?) The United States should play a leading role in developing new and better ways to prevent and react to international problems like Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, and East Timor.

Abuse of Suspected Terrorists and Prisoners by the US

New! Full search results
How concerned are you that the United States might send a detainee from Guantanamo Bay (prison) to another country where he could be tortured or killed--very concerned, somewhat concerned, not very concerned or not at all concerned?
CBS News/New York Times Poll, [Jun, 2009]

Do you think the US (United States) government should or should not release photos of US military personnel abusing Iraqi prisoners several years ago?
CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll, [May, 2009]

(You may have read or heard about a controversy over harsh interrogations of high-value al-Qaeda detainees, people who may have knowledge of imminent terrorist threats against the United States. Defenders call harsh interrogations 'enhanced interrogation techniques,' and critics call them 'torture.') Now I would like to read you several pairs of statements that might be made by policymakers about harsh interrogation of detainees, and have you tell me, for each pair, which one you agree with more....Statement A: Congressman A says America should never use harsh interrogation techniques on detainees, because they are torture. Those techniques undermine our values, hurt our standing in the world, endanger American troops who might be taken prisoner, and yield little or no useful information that could not be obtained by other means. Statement B: Congressman B says that, while harsh interrogation techniques of detainees should be used only rarely, they may be necessary in exceptional situations to protect the country. Those techniques are justified when they are the only way to stop murder of another 3000 innocent Americans in another 9/11 (September 11, 2001, the date of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon). (If Statement A/B, ask:) Do you strongly agree with that statement or somewhat agree with that statement?

National Election Pool Exit Poll, [Nov, 2006]

(Let me read you some things a Republican candidate for Congress says about the Democrats on national security. For each one, please tell me if that statement, if accurate, raises very serious doubts, serious doubts, minor doubts or no real doubts in your own mind about the Democrats on national security.)...We are steadily making progress in Iraq. We've captured Saddam Hussein, killed Zarqawi, held successful elections in Iraq, and increased the number of battle-ready Iraqi battalions. But Democrats want to leave before the job is done, which would send a signal to our troops that the sacrifices they made were not worth it.
