Student Research Awards

Undergraduates--May apply any time during the academic year
University of Connecticut Undergraduates in every department are eligible to apply for this research grant to be awarded for the fall and spring semesters. The research award will pay a stipend of up to $500 a semester.

  • Students should submit a brief proposal (1-2 pages) describing an original research project that they will carry out utilizing and/or expanding upon the data files in the Roper Center. The research may be on any topic of interest--health care, religion, public opinion, etc. Data in the Roper archives must be central to the proposed research. Student proposals are to be submitted to: Mark Abrahamson, Unit 2164.
  • Students should be advised that a familiarity with a statistical software package such as SPSS or SAS would be helpful.
  • Students must also fill out an undergraduate research application available at the Undergraduate Research office (Cue 419) or on-line at : www.our.uconn.edu.
Graduate Students--Summer Fellowships
University of Connecticut graduate students in every department and college are eligible to apply for one of the Warren Jay Mitofsky Graduate Fellowships to be awarded for the summer of 2008. The fellowships pay a stipend of $1,200.

  • Students should submit a brief proposal (two pages is strongly recommended) describing an original research project that they will carry out utilizing and/or expanding upon the datafiles in the Roper Center. Data in the Roper archives must be central to the proposed research.
  • As part of the application, a University of Connecticut faculty advisor must also submit a cover letter (two paragraphs is strongly recommended) noting the theoretical and/or methodological contribution the proposed study is expected to make. It does not matter if the proposed research is related to a student's course work, thesis or dissertation.

Target date for receipt of completed applications is March 14, 2008. Applications received by that date are assured of full consideration. Award notification date is April 7, 2008. Recipients can pick up the first part of their award--$1,000--at the end of May, 2008. Each recipient is expected to submit a brief summary of their research progress on or before August 25, 2008. The final $200 will be awarded upon receipt of that summary.
